What has this world become?
A Hero killed for his sum,
Of power and reputation.
Caesar a God in description.
A friend, a brother and a lord to me.
This world is dark as I see.
Caesar was as cleaver as a fox and as wise as an owl.
Yet they say that his acts were fowl?
Those people don't see the true him.
Their images of him are dull and dim.
He is instead most noble and true.
Not some leader faced - two.
I go today to mourn
A god who was born,
To guide us,
Not make fuss.
To lead us the way
No to meet slay.
It is just not right!
For him I will fight!
I shall, and I will,
Not in hype or thrill
Kill those dogs who have slain,
The life of a statue, in vain
Caesar may have died today,
But in our hearts he will stay.

Brutus, The Great.

I write to you Brutus, on this dreadful night. Why is it dreadful you ask? This wolf-like man, who calls himself Caesar, is destroying your home, your city....Your Rome. Caesar is the wolf, as us citizens are the sheep, and you Brutus; you are the hunter. Rid Rome of this foul creature. We citizens need you to protect us from harm; you must shoot the Wolf before there is no more sheep. Rome needs you to show us the way, guide us, rule for us and be there for us. Awaken your eyes and see what this monster has done to your home and if not stopped what more he will do. You must act now before he becomes too strong. He has had all the glory that one needs. Now it is your turn to get the glory and the fame, which only you deserve. You are the only human that can lead Rome; there is neither one nor wiser or greater then you Brutus. We don't want Caesar, we want you and you only Brutus. Caesar must fall to the power and wisdom that you have Brutus. His fur will be yours to take and wear with pride, and with that fur you will show us Romanians the light, to freedom and joy. Time is of the essence Brutus. You must end Caesar's reign.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Neil Gaiman; the author, was born and raised in England, now residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Neil has written a total of 57 stories, 31 comics of them comics and the other 26 books. Yet books were not enough for Neil; he has produced films; Beowulf and Coraline, theatre and even audio clips.

PLOT

The Season of Mists is the fourth comic novel of the eleven, in the Sandman series. An award-winning and also the most acclaimed comic series of the 1990s.

In "The Sandman: Season Of Mists", Persuaded by the other members of his family, Lord Morpheus embarks on his journey to Hell; to take back his once love that he had condemned there in the first place. Even though Lord Morpheus is high ranked, it is not that easy. Lucifer, the Lord of Hell, has other plans, sworn to kill Morpheus, Lucifer takes action on Morpheus' arrival and executes his plan to destroy the Lord of Dreams. Neil takes us on Morpheus' adventure, struggle and conflict to save the one that use to be the love of his life. Will Morpheus fall to the power of Lucifer? Or will he rise, and bring back his love?

Setting & Atmosphere

The novel is set in the fictional realm of Lord Morpheus. A very cool thing about this setting is that the realm can be made in any way Morpheus wants it to look like, because it is dreams. It can have no real shape or image. Other scenes venture off into; Hell, Heaven, Destiny's Gardens, Hong Kong, Britain and also numerous locations in which dreams occur.

The novel seems to be set in the Fall weathers of October. The book has in the real world, fog on the ground, meaning warm air and cold ground. This is typical and usual weather one would experience in October's weather. Adding onto that, there is a Holiday approaching; Thanksgiving. Resulting in the date set in the book being relatively close to October 14.

The atmosphere is beyond dark. It is punishable, cold, sinful, painful and lonely. The book frequently focuses on scenes in which citizens of Hell are being tortured. Neil doesn't stop there, he adds dialogue to whom are being tortured, responding with painful words, creating a dark, sinful, painful and punishable atmosphere. The realms create a lonely feel to the atmosphere; everyone is basically isolated from each other and the rest of the world throughout the book, except in numerous places. Something anyone would expect in the realms of Dream and Hell.

Lord Morpheus: a protagonist with a great responsibility

One personality trait that excels from Morpheus is his determination. No matter what the circumstances are Morpheus will not give up on finding his lost love and getting her back. Morpheus encounters immense problems in finding her, like how she was held captive, but ends up solving those problems to get what he wants. Not even Hell could stop him from getting what he wants, or anyone that blocks his path.

Another personality trait that Morpheus has strengthened over the years is responsibility. It would require a great amount of responsibility to be responsible for every ones' dreams and taking care of them each and every night. Morpheus takes the responsibility of that and commites to it, forever. It's similar to a Super Hero, "Great power, comes great responsibility."

Healthy. Season of Mists, the fourth volume in the series, being the first comic novel I've read, and more importantly me not reading any of the 3 before this book, It was somewhat easy to follow. It introduced each of the previous characters and described them all, as if it was the first of the series. Making it a newbie-friendly novel. The illustrations and text went together, like peanut butter and jelly, perfectly. On the other hand, some pages were confusing and completely random, maybe because I'm new with this whole comic novel thing? Anyways, keep up the good work Neil.
